“kings and kingdoms falling…[but] The King is among us. His glory surrounds us.” - Elevation Worship
I’m probably too young at this point in my life, but I can’t think of a presidential election that had our country so divided about who should be the next president than the current race. The disturbing reality to me is not who will be the next president, but the loss of heart among our Christian community.
While I do believe there are deep implications for our lives dependent upon the election of a new president, I need to offer a slight rebuke and exhortation to the people of God.
Beloved Church Family, the gospel will not be hindered nor stopped. The greatest news of all times — that God came to save sinners and redeem our broken lives — will continue to prevail. In fact, if you check your church history, you will see that the gospel spread the furtherest and the fastest under the corruption of evil kings. The threats you are afraid of are only momentary and may I dare say even shallow and nearsighted, as you’ve missed the truth of the coming kingdom of Jesus.
The country may fall into despair or prosperity. The country may crumble or seem to prevail…but that’s all momentary.
The false security we’ve put in our economy and our ‘heavens on earth’ through our finances, political parties, and way of life, will all one day seem silly that we trusted and placed so much hope in an earthly prize.
The corruption and sinfulness of a king will quickly fade in the shadows of the coming King Jesus.
We find our greatest rest and trust in a King who has never lied or failed us. Who has been constant with His love and justice, and never changed nor wavered in His character and word. So we rest in knowing that while the world will reject His kingdom, His kingdom will still come. We rest in the midst of political divide, knowing the real King is not surprised nor fretting the condition of America.
America is not our heaven. Whether you want America to be great again or you are looking to a different America, remember the real heaven that awaits you….that my friend is something I cannot describe nor even fathom.
The president is not our savior. Nor will any political party, legislation, law, or leader change the world apart from the gospel. So our hope and rest is in our one God and Savior: Jesus.
I leave you with a scripture that silences our anxiety this political season, and reminds us that one day...we'll see Jesus face to face...
" And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true…..
And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life." — Revelation 21:3-5; 22-27
