Living on Mission: Natalie in the Philippines

Over the last year, we have walked through the book of Acts. We have been able witness God’s hand at work in the establishment of His church. Remarkably and providentially, God does this through normal, everyday people. We see the gospel spread radically through spirit-empowered disciples living on mission whenever and wherever. This is a challenging idea for many of us, because we have primarily viewed mission as something we do or a special calling to go over seas to share the gospel, but this simply isn’t the case. By God’s grace, He has shown us that a disciple of Jesus lives on mission in all of life. We are happy to share a story of a disciple living on mission.

On July 4th, I headed to Pinamalyan, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. This is my third time going and each time has gotten sweeter and sweeter. The Filipino people there have become a part of my heart and life. The first time I went to the Philippines, I was expecting to lead Bible studies. I did get to lead many, many Bible studies, but I also got to discover a love for God’s Word and studying the Bible. It has become so instrumental in my Christian growth.

Cita, a Filipina believer begged to have a Bible study at her house.  We (a team of four ladies) didn’t feel like we would have time to do another Bible study, but she was insistent. Her house was a walking distance from the location where we would be staying, so it was easy to add her into the mix of Bible study groups that we would be starting.

After our team left that summer, many of the Bible studies fell apart and disbanded over time, but one remained. The Bible study at Cita’s house still continued the entire year. When I was able to return that next summer, the group was still meeting. So, that summer my friend Christie and I were able to have the honor of helping plant a church at Cita’s house. We saw first hand a group of people, hungry for God’s Word. We helped believers grow in their faith and become rooted and grounded in His love. It was such a joy to see a desire to know Jesus, despite the issues and struggles of everyday life in the Philippines. Nurturing that sweet body of believers has been one of the greatest things that God has allowed me to be a part of. My 5 months spent there was an unforgettable time of growth and learning.

This summer, my dad and I will be able to go back to the Philippines to once again encourage the believers at the church in Cita’s house in Guinhawa. I am so excited to see their growth spiritually over the last year and a half. We will also be helping at a the church in another community called Pili where JP, Christie’s husband is the pastor. I know that God has so much in store for me in the month of July. Pray for me as I continue on mission in the Philippines.

As church, we would like you to join the staff and pray with us for Natalie. We are eager to hear how the spirit works through her obedience during her time in the Philippines. May we use Paul’s prayer that he shared with the church of Colossae guide us as we pray for Natalie.

Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.  Colossians 4:2-6
